Bismuth

Bismuth is a silvery metal having a high metallic luster which exhibits a slight pink tinge. Bismuth is a minor metal generally mined as a byproduct of other ores such a lead, copper, and tin. The metal is characterized by a low melting point, a high density, and expansion upon solidification (resulting in the solid metal floating on the liquid metal).

Bismuth has a wide range of uses which take advantage of its unique properties such as it non-toxicity, low melting point, density, and color/appearance properties. A large chemical use of Bismuth Subsalicylate is found in anti-diarrheal formulations, Bismuth compounds are also used in cosmetics owing to their sheen in forms such as Bismuth Oxychloride.

Shepherd manufactures both organic and inorganic forms of Bismuth. Our line of BiCAT® and BiLUBE® products offer non-toxic alternatives to more toxic lead and mercury compounds. We also offer a variety of Bismuth inorganic compounds shown below. In addition, we have developed a number or custom Bismuth compounds for customers seeking to take advantage of our ability to tailor the chemical and physical properties of our products for their applications.
