Cobalt

Cobalt is a metallic element having an appearance similar to silver. It is generally recovered as a byproduct metal in the extraction of nickel or copper. Cobalt's primary ores are cobaltite (CoAsS) and erythrite (Co3(AsO4)2).

Cobalt is used in alloys to impart greater hardness and corrosion resistance. It has been historically used in the manufacture of blue and green pigments. Petrochemical applications include its use in refinery catalysts, Fisher Tropsch catalysts, and oxidation catalysts. Cobalt is a key component in tire manufacture in the form of carboxylate compounds which enhance the bonding between the rubber and the brass coated steel cord. Cathode materials represent a sizeable and fast growing segment of cobalt use as well.

Shepherd has been manufacturing organic and inorganic forms of Cobalt for many decades. Our knowledge of the chemistry of this metal coupled with our commercial supply arrangements results in Shepherd being one of the leading companies in the manufacture of cobalt compounds.
