Description
Manganese acetate is primarily used in manufacturing acrylic acid (AA) which is used to make super absorbent materials used in consumer products like diapers. In acrylic acid production manganese acetate is one of several ingredients used as an inhibitor to polymerization. In its natural state acrylic acid polymerizes very easily and an inhibitor mixture is required to prevent this polymerization during acrylic acid manufacturing. Manganese acetate acts as a source of manganese ion which, when combined with the components of an inhibitor mixture, can reduce the naturally occurring polymerization of AA.
Acrylic acid polymerization can have drastic impacts on manufacturing operations. Excessive polymerization can result in contamination of distillation towers that decreases output and increases the differential pressure inside the column. Buildup of polymerized AA can force plants into unplanned shutdowns and incur increased cost of equipment downtime but also the expense of cleaning out the production towers. Minimizing the polymerization that occurs during AA production is key to maximizing uptime and yield of an AA plant.
Manganese acetate can also be used to formulate agricultural fertilizer and soil treatments. Manganese acetate provides a source of manganese metal that acts as a nutrient that can promote better crop yield, preserve soil health, and help farming become more sustainable.
