Polyester Promoters (or Accelerators) manufactured by the Shepherd Chemical Company are in widespread use. Our products have provided successful results to major producers of Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR) for years. Shepherd Chemical also offers several promoters which are unsurpassed for clarity, allowing customers tremendous advantages for translucency and color control in their finished products.
Cobalt Promoters such as our 12% Cobalt Octoate, Cobalt 21 and 6% Cobalt Naphthenate accelerate the decomposition of the organic peroxide initiators (often called catalysts) and promote the cross-linking of polyester resins.
Potassium Octoate is used in conjunction with Cobalt for a synergistic effect and to reduce discoloration of the final Gel-Coat. Shepherd Chemical offers a Water-White Potassium Octoate for customers looking for a color advantage. Potassium may offer cost savings as well as a decline in gel-time drift.
Customers have also had success with Zinc in UPRs. Shepherd Chemical makes a Water-White 8% Zinc Octoate to help customers control color and offer higher clarity in their finished resins.
Copper Naphthenate offers customer control over the curing by inhibiting the cure. Shepherd offers an 8% Copper Naphthenate for customers looking to control surface abnormalities caused by overly-high peak exotherms. The addition of this product may also help to extend shelf-life to pre-promoted resins.
