Millions of Vehicles Have Been Recalled for Defective Airbags. Is Yours One of Them?

Airbags have been used in cars and trucks as passive restraints for over 40 years.  The US government required automakers to install frontal driver and passenger airbags as standard equipment beginning in 1999.  These lifesaving devices are estimated to save 2,800 lives per year in the U.S. alone.  The design and efficiency of airbags continues to improve as technology advances.  One of these important advances was the development of a Guanidine Nitrate/Basic Copper Nitrate generant in the 1990’s.

The Shepherd Chemical Company has been producing metal based specialty chemicals for more than 100 years.  Over the last 25 of those years, we have been a major supplier of Basic Copper Nitrate to global airbag manufacturers.  Our Basic Copper Nitrate is used in the production of a safe generant formulation for the proper deployment of airbags via nitrogen gas evolution.  This technology is much different than the generant technology using Ammonium Nitrate which can be unstable under certain conditions leading to devastating injuries and death.

Our core purpose at Shepherd Chemical is to ‘Create Value and Brighten Lives’.  In an effort to brighten the lives of our families, friends and co-workers, we strongly recommend replacing your defective and potentially dangerous airbags before someone gets injured or dies.  We are proud to be doing our part to save lives through safer airbags.

Our partnership with the airbag industry has provided Shepherd Chemical a unique perspective on the importance of replacing defective airbags.  It is very easy to determine if your airbag is potentially defective and needs to be replaced.  Simply go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website and check by VIN # if your vehicle has been recalled.  If it has, take immediate action to get the airbag replaced!
